Oompa Loompas

- These come in diminutive sizes, but they have lots of energy. They sing, they dance, they are the small voice of reason. And they get to wear the coolest costumes. Oompa Loompas of all ages are invited.

Ensemble

 - Good singing and acting required for all kinds of interesting parts. Ensemble performers will find themselves doing different characters at different times, and having a blast doing it.

The Kids...

Charlie Bucket:

- Bright eyed, excitable young boy, with an air of purity and innocence that surrounds him. He exudes kindness and generosity, and exemplifies all the qualities that a good son should possess. It is this good nature that sets Charlie apart from the other golden ticket winners.
- Boy aged 8 to 14
- Strong singer.
- Movement will be necessary (no specific training?)

Veruca Salt:

- The epitome of the “Spoilt only child” stereotype, Veruca Salt’s biting and often aggressive persona adds an edge to the piece that is both horrifying and wonderful to watch. Constantly demanding more and more of her parents, particularly of her father, she has the adults in her life wrapped around her little finger. It’s this manipulative quality that makes her character so interesting. But she knows her audience and quick as a flash can switch from brat to golden child in order to further her own desires. She knows what she wants and will stop at nothing until she gets it.

Mike TV

- Mike is a scarily accurate portrayal of how future generations may present after being even more absorbed by the digital world. His obvious aggression is channelled into his gaming, and along side this has a total disregard and often disdain for the real people in his life, preferring to engage only with his screen. However, his is sharp as a whip and wins his Golden ticket through calculating the serial number of the chocolate bars - making him a formidable child when having his intelligence and anger combined.

Violet Beauregard

- Self Centred and passionate, Violet Beauregard is as driven as she is a vibrant and larger than life personality. Being a world champion gun chewer, her competitive and demanding spirit is what leads her to be a golden ticket winner. Her greed for gum and success often gets the better of her, and she is not one who takes losing well.

Augustus Gloop

- Putting anyone with a large appetite to shame, Augustus Gloop hungrily thought his way to golden ticket. His characters one that exude greed and pursues abundance making him and obtuse and unlikable boy. Enabled by his overbearing mother and father entering a chocolate factory is simply heaven for young Mr Gloop.

- Aged 8 to 14

The "Grown-Ups" ...

Willy Wonka:

- With a glint of mischief in his eyes, Willy Wonka presents the dream of every child across the world - to one day own a factory full of Chocolate and magic. In portraying Wonka, we should see his almost childlike sense of fun, humour, and creativity. Absurdity is crucial, letting go of one’s inhibitions, so as to fully execute this wild and entertaining character.
- Man aged 35 to 60
- Strong singer
- Movement will be necessary but no specific training is required

Grandpa Joe:

- A ray of sunshine in the hard life of the Bucket household, the relationship between Grandpa Joe and Charlie is central to the piece. At it’s core, this show is about how our families impact our behaviour, and the engaging and vibrant stories that Grandpa Joe tells, sets Charlie’s imagination on fire. Grandpa Joe should bring a comedic and light quality to the stage and the role, as well as being a role model and crucial emotional support for Charlie, having a caring and nurturing side to Joe as well.

- Man aged 50 to 65
- Movement will be necessary but no specific training

Grandma Josephine, Granda Georgina and Grandpa George:

- lovable and wide-eyed grandparents, Charlie‘s family are his supporters and cheerleaders throughout the show.

Mrs Bucket:

- A caring and concerned mother, she helps guide Charlie through his childhood, and raises a delightful young boy. She desperately tries to provide for her family in any way that she knows she can, making her a model mother.

Mrs Gloop:

- overbearing and greedy, Mrs Gloop portrays all the nasty characteristics that she has clearly passed onto her son. She has eyes only for glory and when her son provides her with this opportunity for fame and fortune she grabs it with both hands. However, she deeply loves her son and when he is placed in danger is desperate to help him.

Mr Sam Beauregard:

- Concerned with nothing more than the money in his pocket, Violet’s father raised his daughter with the same ambition that he possesses. For him, the chance to be inside the chocolate factory having won a golden ticket is a prime investment opportunity, a chance to bring himself more fame and fortune. Beady-eyed and conniving, Mr Beauregard‘s character is not one whom you would wish to cross.

Mr Salt:

- doting on his daughters every whim, Mr. Salt exemplifies what it means to truly spoil a child. He uses his success and power to make sure that his daughter has everything she could possibly desire, and he is completely unaware of how detrimental this is to her social development. He lives only to please her and cannot bear the thought of his little girl being unhappy and quickly Caves at her every demand. This leads him to crumble into a fit of despair when he feels that she is in danger, demonstrating that while he is incredibly obtuse to what it means to be a good parent, he is still a devoted father.

Mrs TV:

- navigating the challenging task of dealing with her aggressive son, Mrs TV has the challenging job of keeping her rabble rousing child under control, and not succeeding. She wishes to live a peaceful life and so avoids confrontation with her son in order to make her life easier, refusing to discipline him and resulting in his angry demeanour.
