When the Spanish writer Miguel the Cervantes found himself thrust into a
dungeon with violent cutthroat types, he only had one chance to protect
himself and his most prized possession, a manuscript about an anachronistic knight errant, named Don Quixote.
A knight who refuses to live in a world that is so corrupt. And by force of will, he fights to smash the evil and raise everyone up.
Those dangerous criminals had already emptied his belongings, and were now threatening to burn the book.
What he did to save himself and his masterpiece was nothing short of a hypnotic miracle. And even more remarkable was the effect he had on those prisoners.
And, as Quixote, on a woman of ill repute named Aldonza. Her four-word line at the end of the show is among the most moving moments in a play that goes deep into the hearts of all who dream.
And even more remarkable than that was the transformative effect that this show has had on audiences for 60 years. It's more than a show, it's a mission.
